Medium Yarn Category
The Medium Yarn category includes worsted, afghan, and Aran weight yarns. Knit gauge for 4 inches of stockinette is 16-20 stitches on US 7-9 needles.
Thus, the label of worsted weight yarn is sometimes labeled with the above yarn symbol featuring a prominent number 4 in the center, with the word “medium” appearing underneath.
Using Worsted Yarn
Worsted weight yarn is terrific for knitting sweaters, scarves, mittens, leg warmers, and afghans. A worsted weight yarn is the most frequently used. Because it is easy to use, it is an appropriate starter size for the beginning knitter. This is the perfect yarn for beginners because it has nice stitch definition, is easy to work with, and is neither too bulky nor too thin.
Worsted vs. Aran
Approximately double the weight of a DK or sport yarn.
Used interchangeably, worsted and Aran are not the same. Aran yarns tend to be slightly heavier than worsted yarns.
The UK calls worsted yarn Aran weight. Australia labels it 10-ply.
